DORIS STREET - Walney Island See also: Vickerstown Named after HMS Doris. A Battle-cruiser, Doris' keel was laid down during August 1894 and was launched at the local Barrow shipyard on the 3rd March 1896. She was completed and entered service in October 1897. During her service she played an important part in the 1899 - 1902 Boer War. Two of the ships more famous victories came in 1914, when she captured German merchant ship and was responsible for the sinking of an Ottoman Merchant ship. Doris' fate came in 1919 when she was scrapped.
